Even though it is many a wee girl’s dream to have a fairly tale wedding, the prospect of what comes after (i.e the honeymoon) is often a lot more exciting. With the whole world to choose from and a bigger budget than most other trips, this is an opportunity to spurge on exactly what you want and fulfil your wildest travelling desires.
It is fair to say that most couples will choose a beach retreat for the ultimate in relaxation. This makes sense after going through all the stress and excitement leading up to the big event. But a lot can be said for thinking outside of the box too, as the alternatives can be just as romantic. So, here are three dream places for a honeymoon
Synonymous with sun, sea and sand, the island of Mauritius is an archetypal honeymoon destination. You could quite easily spend your entire trip relaxing on the beach with occasional swims in the aqua-blue ocean. However, there is more to see and do in Mauritius than you might think.
Beneath the water’s surface you will find some mesmerising marine life and the world’s third largest coral reef, which surrounds the entire island. On terra firma, you can also go hiking or mountain climbing amid rough and ready terrain.
But if this sounds like too much hard work, head to the capital of Port Louis and its Caudan Waterfront complex of restaurants, shops and casinos.
A Summer wedding in NYC is awesome. July is typically very hot and sticky so June, or late August-September is the best time. Alternatively you could opt for a Winter wedding. December in New York is an especially magical time , despite the cold temperatures. This is when the Big Apple turns into a romantic wonderland leading up to Christmas. In addition to a cityscape draped with festive decorations and a dusting of snow, you can enjoy horse and carriage tours around Central Park or a Manhattan dinner cruise on the Hudson River. The Christmas decorations at Tiffany and Co., Bergdorf Goodman, and Lord and Taylor are stunning.
And what trip to New York at Christmas would be complete without ice-skating in the shadow of the Rockefeller Center’s magnificent tree? The best view of the city is from the 30 Rock observation deck as you get great views of the Empire State Building as well as the city and Central Park. If you want to keep warm a visit to The Met and the Frick gallery are amazing.
Some of you might be surprised by this leftfield choice, but the intimate and awesome city of Singapore makes for a great honeymoon. First and foremost, it boasts an abundance of luxurious hotels and world-class restaurants.
You don’t have to go far to unearth little pieces of paradise either, such as Bukit Batok Town Park, St John’s Island, the Botanic Gardens and the beaches of Sentosa.
At night, you can take a cruise down the Singapore River while gazing in astonishment at the stunning Gardens by the Bay as well as the light and water show at the Marina Bay Sands.
As for me and my partner, we chose New York as our wedding and honeymoon destination. We didn’t have to travel far as we were living there at the time. A simple registry office ceremony at the town hall followed by photos in Central Park which has to be one of my most favorite places in the world.
